- Question 1Please describe your company and what makes your furniture special.
- President Hiromatsu:
- We pay attention to offering high-quality lifestyles through furniture that makes our customers’ lives pleasant. To enable this, we pursue comfort not only from the furniture but for the entire space; and we also make all things in the living space, clocks, lights, wooden toys, bags, etc. We make furniture with universality that can be used for a long time. Our designs are not too complete, but flexible enough for users to change to fit their life space.
- Question 2What was your honest thought when first asked to make “Cat Furniture”?
- President Hiromatsu:
- We had been making furniture for children, so I thought that furniture for cats was interesting. In the past, I made a dining table for cats at the workshop I went with a cat sitter. It turned out to be very popular among cat lovers, so I thought furniture for cats may become popular.
- Question 3What are you committed to when making cat furniture?
- President Hiromatsu:
- I’m glad we were able to faithfully recreate the furniture we currently make in miniature. The SANTA FE series is created to evoke the Santa Fe style that originated on West Coast of the US. Considering compatibility to the design, we used pine from the Rocky Mountains. To bring out the feel of furniture used for several decades, we pounded and rounded corners, and purposely added scratches. This is a step that can only be done by adjusting how hard we pound and scratch depending on the hardness of the wood. Artistic sense and artisan skill are required to bring out a natural look.
- Question 4What is your view of the future?
- President Hiromatsu:
- I would like the company to have a strong core, but also to be flexible. The core of the company is creation of furniture with a gentle design that has some leeway. There are many facets that furniture makers cannot see from their point of view, so I like to interact with people in diverse fields to understand their point of view. In this day and age, I think our “senses” are retrogressing. In such times, we want to sharpen our “sense” of “like” and “comfortableness” to create furniture suitable for them. Furniture made this way may not be accepted by all, but I think some people will empathized with it.
