The bed is where we relieve the fatigue of the day. This is why we made the bed frame with gentle natural wood. The expansive grain of the natural wood presents a relaxing space. There is a space on the crosspiece of the bed to place items like glasses or books. The slotted board is made with breathable paulownia wood to prevent moisture from accumulating under the bed and to keep it clean. The refreshing aroma leads the user into a dream world.
- Question 1Please describe your company and what makes your furniture special.
- President Tateno:
- We make furniture using natural wood with the concept “furniture that becomes a part of the family with use.” Furniture will grow lustrous over time through touch and exposure to sunshine. This is what makes furniture age with the family who owns it. We put our hearts into creating furniture with the desire to enrich and deepen the ties of the families that use it.
- Question 2What was your honest thought when first asked to make “Cat Furniture”?
- President Tateno:
- What? For cats? This was my honest response. We had never made furniture for cats, so we began with the search for how to make it. “Never done it before” is a motivation in itself, and our craftsmen never say “impossible.” They are the kind of people who try to think of a way, so I was confident that we could create good products.
- Question 3What are you committed to when making cat furniture?
- President Tateno:
- Usually standard size of wood for furniture is 27mm thick. To make such miniature furniture while maintaining the original design, we adjusted to 15mm. We were careful with thin boards because maintaining strength would be a problem and such thin boards warp easily. There are no metal fixtures that fit this size, so we made them with wood. From shaving wood, pressure bonding, polishing to assembly, each part is done by professionals specializing in each of the steps in the same processes that go into making furniture for people.
- Question 4What is your view of the future?
- President Tateno:
- Lifestyles are changing and we hope to continue making wooden furniture that enrich lives by responding to customers’ wishes. We examine producers, sometimes collaborating with designers from outside, proactively trying new things. Machinery is used for some processes, but manual work will never be and should not be eliminated. So called “reading wood (examining wood grain)” requires long years of experience. Our staff with long years of experience and new staff come together for the love of wood and inherit the skills of experienced artisans.
