Pancone is an Italian word meaning thick board. Using thick natural board, we developed a sofa making use of the natural beauty and warmth of wood. This beautiful leather covered sofa looks solid and exhibits a sense of presence in the room. Our original “wave processing” technology is used for the armrest. It’s so smooth and beautifully finished that you want to touch it.
- Question 1Please describe your company and what makes your furniture special
- President Sakemi:
- We make furniture to order for each customer with the motto, “Especially for you.” Our design makes utmost use of the nodes and skin of the tree. Wave processing is original technology developed by us that adds natural wavy unevenness to the surface of the wood. To create furniture we can be proud of, each of our skilled craftsmen bring their ideas to the work. Once we accept an order, we keep going until the customer is satisfied.
- Question 2What was your honest thought when first asked to make “Cat Furniture”?
- President Sakemi:
- Obviously, it was our first time making cat furniture. It is the same as making furniture for people in that we must make what best suits the customer. I delegated this project to a team of young craftsmen as an opportunity to excel.
- Shimazaki:
- I simply thought it was an interesting project. I learned that the objective behind creating furniture for cats is to highlight the Okawa furniture technology. If that is the case there are points I wanted to highlight. With that in mind, I began making the furniture.
- Question 3What are you committed to when making cat furniture?
- Shimazaki:
- Wave processing of the armrest was one point. The blade of the machine that we usually use for this process is too big for cat furniture, so we made a special bade for this project. The original furniture is designed to make use of bulging nodes of the wood, so I was very careful with the size of the nodes and wave for this furniture.
- Matsunobu:
- I was committed to having a structure that could be disassembled. There are no metal fittings this size, and I also had to consider strength. It was difficult to find solutions. There were many problems that could not be seen in the design drawing. I got a lot of help from my experienced coworkers in finding solutions for each of the problems.
- Question 4What is your view of the future?
- President Sakemi:
- I would like us to be a company that proactively accept challenges. It’s easier said than done. It is always difficult to overcome challenges. But when we do, there we find joy from manufacturing. The young team that was given this project contemplated, worked hard and completed the task, which led them to face hardships and feel the joy from overcoming them. Being involved from the beginning to the end, it gave them confidence, which in turn made them want to do new things. I hope this experience was a positive influence on their furniture making.
